Hi all,
I've not been running outside since October due to a hip flexor/hamstring injury. I've had physio and have been running for 10 minutes once a week on the treadmill for the last 3 weeks.
I went for my first run outside on the weekend and managed 1½kms, but I had a slight ache in the hip flexor area. Do you think it could still not be fixed or if it's just crying out due to a lack of running in such a long time?
I regularly ran 10kms before injury and have entered into the Bupa 10k in May. I feel as though I may never get up to those distances again though! Very frustrating indeed!
Any words of wisdom much appreciated!

Hi 2Sam,
Can't give you much in the way of advice, but May is quite a long way off. When I started running (at the age of 61) I managed a 10k within a month of starting, so I don't think that you need to panic about "not being fit enough". Your fitness level won't have plummeted that dramatically. I think that your main problem is probably going stir-crazy, and seeing May as being closer than it really is, because you can't believe that you'll EVER get running again.
Have a bit of patience, and try to keep up the cardio without risking aggravating your hip. Rowing machine? Swimming? Cycling?

I would go nice and easy. I did my first outdoor run for a couple of months yesterday and it hurt everywhere, today all my leg muscles are stiff! Its hard to tell that kind of discomfort from an old injury flaring up. And so much is in the mind, if your running along worrying about a specific pain, you will feel it more.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies. I think you're both right in that alot of it is mental attitude and I just need to get my confidence back again!
Thanks again! :)
